Found this program on sourceforge
http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/index.html
It will stop brute force attacks the same as BFD, the difference is this program can run as a daemon.
I think this would be great if it doesn't add to server resources. Running it every 30secs would stop those 1009 attempts in ten minutes problems I get now.
Has anyone tried this out yet? COuld the PowerVPS guys try it out and confirm if it's a good match for a VPS?

Hi StingRay
There is nothing special about a VPS in this regard, so anyone can try it safely. I'd just watch for load and memory consumption.

Thanks Charles,
I was concerned because in another thread you mentioned that you didn't want people to CRON BFD every 5mins or 1 min, etc due to the overall constant load on the server.

Everyone is running processes, so it's not like were trying to stop you run things :)
The more frequently processes you run, obviously the higher your VPS load will be, but the main issue with the common 1 and 5 minute crons is that the time is synchronized on all VPS and so it means at the exact same instant, all VPS attempt to do the exact same task which can spike the load on the server, especially if the taks is resource intensive. So my only point was if you need something run every 5 minutes, it is not necessary to run it on 5,10,15 - you could run it on 1,6,11,16 for example. We actually do stagger the common ones like BFD to avoid this.
It would nice if you could choose the second to start cron jobs on imo. Even staggering jobs by 5 seconds can make a big difference :)

Well, I tried it out after seeing your post. Had it running as daemon since (roughly 10 hrs so far) and I havent noticed any extra load.
